Okwe: Play the Igbo Seed Game Online Free
Okwe is the seed game of Igboland, played on long carved boards and named after the tree whose seeds fill its holes. Like Ayo it belongs to the mancala family, but its relay sowing makes every move a chain reaction.
Sow your seeds, keep going whenever your last seed lands on more seeds, and capture when you finish in an empty hole on your side. Play the long 2×10 board or the quick 2×6 board, against the computer or a friend.
How to play Okwe
- Pick up all the seeds from one of your holes and sow them one by one, counter-clockwise.
- If your last seed lands in a hole that already has seeds, pick those up and keep sowing.
- Your move ends when your last seed falls into an empty hole.
- End in an empty hole on your own side to capture the seeds opposite it.
- When someone cannot move, the game ends and the most seeds wins.
FAQ
Is Okwe the same as Ayo?
Both are mancala games, but Okwe is Igbo and uses relay sowing, so one move can travel round the board many times.
